The desert resort courses here run on the same inverted calendar as Arizona — busy from fall to spring, largely dormant in the summer heat. The player mix is distinctive: seasonal residents who spend the winter here, and visitors from Los Angeles and further afield who come for a few days at a time. Both groups leave, and that's the crux of it. A club left behind in February belongs to someone who's gone by May, and it sits in a bin behind a pro shop through a summer when almost nobody is playing.

In the desert scrub beside fairways, where anything laid down is invisible from a short distance. In seasonal rentals at the end of a winter stay. And in carts, universal on the desert layouts.
